With Halloween just around the corner I thought we could all use a little fun by revisiting past and current black cat superstitions. There are many superstitions and they differ quite a bit depending on their country of origin. The history of the black cat is mesmerizing to say the least.
Black Cat History:
The History that turned a cute little feline into a furry ball of walking evil dates back to the middle ages. During the middle ages when religious beliefs were at an all-time high, the black cat was associated with witches and the evil that they believed witches were solely responsible for. Some even believed that witches were capable of turning themselves into a black cat.
Black Cat Myths:
The most popular and well known is that a black cat crossing your path was proof of certain doom within the near future. Even stranger is the myth that a black cat lying on the chest of someone while they were sleeping signified oncoming death. This last myth is considered the evilest and to me the funniest is the belief that a black cat is a demon from hell that is present for the sole purpose of preventing access to heaven.
Black cats are a favorite this time of year, despite the dread that they once caused. Oddly some of their superstitions have lived on and are still whispered today. Have you ever cringed at a black cat crossing your path? If so, that's a result of a subconscious dread of evil from long, long ago.
